After the adventure: What to do around the park and in the region

Coming down from the trees, taking off your harness, and now what? You often ask us how to extend your afternoon or day after visiting Mendexa Park. You are in luck, as our park is set in an incomparable location. Here are our best recommendations to figure out what to do around us and complete a perfect day in the Lea-Artibai region, starting from the closest options and moving a bit further away.

A refreshing dip at Karraspio beach (Mendexa)

Very close to the park, Mendexa hides a true treasure: Karraspio beach. After working up a sweat in the trees, taking a refreshing dip in the Cantabrian Sea is an absolute luxury.

Walk to the island of Garraitz in Lekeitio

Right across from Isuntza beach in Lekeitio, you can walk to the island of Garraitz. However, to cross the stone path, it is essential that the tide is low. We highly recommend checking the tide tables before you go and, above all, keeping your return time in mind so you can head back safely. Climb the island and enjoy the incredible views of the town and the sea.

Santa Catalina Lighthouse: Magical sunsets

To end the day, we recommend visiting the Santa Catalina lighthouse. It is located at the end of a pleasant walk along the edge of the cliffs and offers wonderful sunsets.

Water adventure: Kayaking or paddle surfing

If you feel like getting into the water after flying through the air on our circuits, you can rent kayaks and paddle surf boards (SUP) or join a guided activity. To explore the bay or head up the Lea River, you will find the following at the Lekeitio port:

  • UR Lekeitio / Tantak: Kayak and SUP board rentals, and guided tours. (Tel: 688 80 26 81 / Google Maps)

Lea-Artibai: What to do around us a bit further away

The plan doesn’t just end on the coast. The Lea-Artibai region hides many gems inland and in neighboring towns that are well worth visiting:

For nature lovers, the Lea Route is an unbeatable choice. It starts in Munitibar and goes all the way to Lekeitio, passing between old farmhouses and mills through Aulesti, Gizaburuaga, and Amoroto. It is a quiet, green walking path that follows the river, perfect for the whole family.

If you are looking for a different and wilder beach, you can head over to the Ogella cove in Ispaster; it’s a unique place to feel the power of the sea and nature.

If you prefer an authentic seafaring atmosphere, visiting Ondarroa is a must. Its peculiar port, the charm of its old town, and its bridges (Zubi Zaharra, the Beach Bridge, Itsasaurre…) will surprise you. On your way there, you can easily get lost in the green surroundings and peaceful farmhouse neighborhoods of Berriatua.

Markina-Xemein, on the other hand, is the capital of Basque pelota. You can discover its “University of Cesta Punta” (the legendary fronton court) there. Bordering the town, we have Etxebarria, with its wide green meadows and the beautiful surroundings of the Munibe palace.

If you love history and architecture, in the town of Ziortza-Bolibar you can visit the spectacular Zenarruza Collegiate Church—an essential stop on the Camino de Santiago—where the Simón Bolívar Museum is also located.

Adventures among the pines, the sea, and the hidden corners of the region are the perfect combination. The most complete summer plan is waiting for you!
